14 Years of Amsterdam Cupcake

Dear cupcake lovers,

September is here, bringing new energy, new moments to celebrate, and a fresh start after the summer holidays. But before I look ahead to all the beautiful things coming our way, I’d love to take you back to the past few weeks—because it’s been such a special time, both at home and in the bakery.

For many families in the north of the Netherlands, ‘normal life’ has started up again—kids back to school, parents back to work, and calendars slowly filling up. In our home, we had a big milestone: my daughter Evy started grade three. I’ll be honest, I was just as nervous as she was. The last weeks of summer were all about her emotional wellbeing: How would she feel? Would she find her groove? What would she need from me? The beautiful thing is—she did amazing. The first week went better than I could have hoped, and I’m so proud of her resilience.

That also meant I put the bakery on a slightly lower flame for a while, so I could pick up Evy from school more often and spend extra time with her. Thankfully, my wonderful team was there to keep things running. And that was much needed—because even though we were closed in August, you all found us online in droves. The moment we reopened, orders started pouring in. I’ll admit: it was nerve-wracking to close the bakery completely for three weeks for the first time in twelve years. Financially, it’s always a risk. But I’m so grateful you found us again after the holidays, and that we could dive back in, delivering joy and magic all across Amsterdam.

And then—drumroll—yesterday Amsterdam Cupcake Company turned 14! On September 1st, 2011, I started my baking adventure from home, then in temporary spaces, and since 2013 in our bakery in Amsterdam West. It still feels magical to do what I love most: making your moments even sweeter, together with you. Yesterday, I took a quiet moment to reflect, feeling so proud and grateful. Fourteen years as a bake business babe—who would have thought?

So, what’s next? Now we head into autumn together, with all the beautiful holidays ahead: Halloween, Sinterklaas, Christmas… But let’s also enjoy those last summer vibes a little longer. New flavors are coming, special orders are on their way, and—as always—there will be plenty of magic from the oven.
